On December 27–28, 2025, the Research and Training Centre for Community Development (RTCCD), in collaboration with Thuy An Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities, organized a training course entitled “Supporting Families of Children with Disabilities to Care for Their Children at Home” for parents of children with intellectual disabilities.
The course was attended by 30 participants, most of whom were parents and primary caregivers.

This was the third and final course in a series of positive parenting skills trainings for families of children with disabilities, under the initiative “Supporting Families of Children with Disabilities to Care for Their Children at Home,” initiated by International Social Service (ISS).

The course was jointly implemented by the Research and Training Centre for Community Development (RTCCD), the Thuy An Rehabilitation Center, and SPOON foundation. Prior to this course, two earlier training programmes had been delivered for families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and children with physical disabilities. Previously, two courses had been delivered for families of children with autism and children with physical disabilities.

The course was designed based on the specific challenges and priority needs of children with intellectual disabilities, with the aim of strengthening families’ capacity to care for, nurture, and support their children’s learning at home. The program focused on the following key topics:

  • Nutrition for the development of children with disabilities and guidance on proper feeding

  • Developing children’s self-care skills

  • Effective communication skills between parents and children with disabilities

  • Injury and accident prevention for children with disabilities, including choking response, electric shock, drowning, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

  • Emotional support and stress reduction for parents

  • The rights of children with disabilities

The training was conducted in a positive and dynamic atmosphere, with many hands-on activities based on real-life situations, making it easier for parents to understand and apply what they learned in their daily caregiving. Participants highly appreciated the practical and relevant content of the course, which closely matched their needs in supporting their children at home.

At the end of the course, families were connected through a Zalo group and guided to access RTCCD’s online learning system as they moved into the online support phase. Here, parents can review the materials covered in the training and continue learning additional knowledge to support their children’s holistic development.

A sign language class for families of children with hearing impairments will be held on January 10–11, 2026.
