Following the success of the first training at Hai Ha District Health Center, on 1 October 2025, the Quang Ninh Provincial Centre for Disease Control (CDC), in collaboration with the Research and Training Centre for Community Development (RTCCD), organized the next training session for grassroots community health workers (CHWs) at Quang Yen District Health Center (DHC).
This activity is part of the EM-THRIVE Project – Enabling Mountainous and Rural Children From Five Provinces in Vietnam to Grow and Thrive, which aims to strengthen maternal and child health care capacity at the community level.
The training officially opened at Quang Yen DHC’s main hall with the participation of 58 health workers from 29 commune and ward health stations.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Nguyen Huu Lac, Deputy Director of Quang Yen DHC, emphasized:
“This is a meaningful and practical program for parents and grandparents to better care for their children and grandchildren. I remember when my wife and I had our first child, we didn’t even know how to bathe the baby properly. So when you train parents in the community, you must speak clearly and demonstrate effectively. I encourage all participants to attend fully, on time, and seriously so that after this course, you can confidently guide people at your commune health stations.”
The three-day training (1–3 October 2025) was led by Dr. Doan Thi Hanh, Head of the Reproductive Health Department, and Dr. Tran Nguyen Vu from the Non-Communicable Diseases & Nutrition Department, Quang Ninh CDC.
RTCCD assigned Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong, MSc, to provide technical support and supervision throughout the course.
During the training, CHWs practiced teaching demonstrations, received feedback from trainers and peers, and learned how to improve their facilitation skills.
Each participant was introduced to and practiced using a training toolkit that included videos, dolls, and illustrated manuals — making the lessons more interactive and easier to understand for parents.
Dr. Dinh Thi Hoai, Head of Hiep Hoa A Commune Health Station, shared:
“This training provided me with many practical skills and knowledge. Integrating the sessions into the regular Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) works well because parents are already present at the station. After practicing here, I feel confident that I can conduct similar sessions at my health station. I am truly grateful for this program.”
Participants highly valued the training for combining updated medical knowledge — such as first aid and early child development — with improved presentation and community engagement skills.
Many health workers expressed excitement when receiving the parent education toolkit, calling it an effective “assistant” that makes their teaching easier and more impactful.
RTCCD reaffirmed its commitment to continue providing technical and professional support to Quang Ninh CDC in expanding similar trainings to other communes and wards.
Through these efforts, the EM-THRIVE program not only strengthens the capacity of grassroots health workers but also directly benefits parents, grandparents, and children — the key beneficiaries at the community level.
