Phase 2 of the research project aims to “evaluate the effectiveness of intervention models Community learning clubs for the comprehensive development of children in Vietnam” and will deploy on a scale of 84 communes in Ha Nam province (42 control communes and 42 communes intervention).
Target
The project aims to evaluate the improvement of the mother’s health during pregnancy and child-rearing, and the improvement of the child’s health and development index during the first year of life, due to the school club program. Community training brings
Research hypothesis
Compared to children in the control group (mothers who only use regular health services), children with mothers who participate in the Community Learning Club will have a measurable increase of health status in their overall development. Health (birth weight, weight, and height by month of age, the incidence of diarrhea, acute respiratory, anemia) were statistically significantly lower (P <0.05), and indicators cognitive, emotional, motor, and language development (measured according to Bayley’s evaluation scale – BSID on comprehensive development of children) were significantly higher (P <0.05).

The project began to deploy in 1/2018 and ended on 3/2020.
Project activities
The project is implemented in 84 communes of Ha Nam province, randomly selected communes are divided into 2 groups including 42 intervention
communes (Club implementation) and 42 control communes (only national care programs and existing local service are received), including 1245 women. Activities of the project include: 6 surveys conducted simultaneously in both the intervention group and the control group to compare indicators of parents’ behavioral changes, child impacts and indicator measurement. Economic savings are also evaluated in the 2 groups.
Deploying club activities in 42 intervention communes:
- The main subjects are pregnant women under 20 weeks selected from the initial survey to join the club during the pregnancy and raising children under 24 months old and women raising children under 2 years old. In addition, other young caregivers (grandparents, fathers, maids) are encouraged to participate in a number of activities to support mothers to take good care of their children.
- Videotapes of technical guidance on child care and management, wall posters that summarize practical steps, family homework assignments, childcare family guide book, guide Women’s Union staff how to operate the club.
- Moderators: Commune Women’s Union officers, each commune selects 3 staff – 1 WU officer, 1 CHS staff and 1 preschool teacher. These are active and knowledgeable individuals in the community mobilization skills to transport operating the club. Club executives will be allowed to participate in 5 courses, 3 days per course. The staff will learn the skills of operating the club and cultivate the expertise to be able to convey to participants in the most effective way.
Expected results of Phase 2 (2017-2019)
- A set of documents for attractive and scientific club managers and meeting the skills and knowledge needs of grassroots officials: 05 DVDs + 05 accompanying handbooks + hanging paintings and flyers.
- Handbook for Child Development Development for parents: 03 attractive design books, tailored to current market needs, informative (pregnant care, caring for 0-1-year-old children, take care of 1-2-year-old children
- An analysis of the economic-health efficiency of intervention models and advocacy publications.
- The teaching staff is set up, preparing for the integration phase into the national program, the system of training women union staff, nurses and village health workers.
Project progress (updated to December 31, 2018)
There are 951 people participating in the club through 2 modules (8 articles) including 589 pregnant women, 223 husbands, and 139 grandparents.
The number of participants in the club activities is 8363 times
The kit for the club includes the family book “No-child raising”, a handbook for executives. Currently, the club has developed 27 photos and posters (9 are in production), with 21 video clips serving the club (29 are producing).
2/4 training courses for provincial trainers have been implemented (16 provincial trainers) and 3/5 trainers for commune club managers.

Some feedback
- After joining the club with my wife, I arranged a lot of time to help my wife in the housework.
