Description: This project aims to reduce morbidity and mortality of children under 5 years old and improve knowledge of child care to the community of ethnic minorities in 16 communes of Muong Nhe district of Dien Bien province through the provision of a series of training courses for medical staff. Particular themes are the strengthening of treatment practice (of common childhood diseases, pediatric first aid, critical care for newborns) and the improvement of quality of consultancy for advice to families regarding the prevention, early detection and care for sick children. A series of six training courses for commune health staff across three topics ((1) IMCI, (2) PLS and (3) NR & ENC) will be followed up by supportive supervision, an innovative component which is expected to enhance the effectiveness of this venture. Commune health staff (rather than district or central health staff) were chosen in order to increase the accessibility and availability of quality health service to the ethnic minorities and reduce the overload of patients at district and provincial hospitals.
