Training course 4: “Healthy Childcare” in Ha Nam Province

On September 29th & 30th, 2014, Research and Training Centre for Community Development (RTCCD) in collaboration with Ha Nam Provincial Women’s Union implemented a training course in “Healthy Childcare” in Ha Nam Province. This was the 4th in 7 courses under the Project on “Learning Clubs for Women’s Health and Infant Development”. The Project aims to provide knowledge about maternal care and childcare (0-24 months) and skills of trainers for communal women’s union members and health workers in Ha Nam Province to run their local clubs.

In this training course, Tran Tuan, PhD.,Tran Thu Ha, MPH. from Research and Training Centre for Community Development (RTCCD) and Sarah Hanieh, PhD. from University of Melbourne (Australia) gave lessons about:

·         Mental health care for women in postpartum

·         How to get a baby to sleep and calm a crying baby

·         Breastfeeding and supplementation

·         How to play and communicate with infants at 3-6 months of age to stimulate their development

Concurrently, with the support from Haniel, PhD., participants were guided about early intervention and management for visual, auditory and dental signs of abnormalities.

After learning the theory, participants directly practiced how to get a baby to sleep, bath a baby, change diapers and umbilical care with dolls and conducted the mock teaching. Ms. Tan, the president of Liem Can Communal Women’s Union said: “In terms of teaching methods, how to run and organize courses, I find it very scientific. Thanks to the combination of different ways of learning such as seeing, hearing, writing, practice and mock teaching, the training course is very practical. I find it definitely easy to understand.”
