This validity study was conducted in response to a need for a simple, locally appropriate and cheap screening tool for mental illness in children. The aim of this matched case-control study is to determine the screening ability, cut-off point, sensitivity and specificity of the Vietnamese version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), to compare its sensitivity and specificity with the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) commonly used by the National Hospital of Paediatrics in Hanoi (NHP). The study results indicated that the validated SDQ25 Vietnamese version the researchers’ suggestion to the Ministry of Health was that it should be used nation-wide to measure mental health burden among children aged 4-16 in Vietnam.
